Have Stained Teeth? – These Unhealthy Habits Are Culprits

An adage says that “Prevention is better than cure”, so the best way to make your smile brighter and your teeth whiter is to avoid or limit the consumption of staining substances.

Unknown to many, there are several food and beverages that cause severe discolouration of teeth and ugly stains. It is essential you avoid these stain-causing food.

1. Excessive Intake of Red Wine, Coffee or Tea

Coffee is one of the common reasons that trigger teeth staining or discolouration.

Whenever you drink (excessive) coffee throughout the day and don’t rinse your mouth after it, the dark pigments settle down on enamel of your teeth. This causes the teeth to lose their natural whiteness over time. Calling coffee is the main culprit would be wrong! Too much red wine or black tea can also cause staining teeth.

2. Smoking

Among the numerous health hazards of smoking, discoloured and stain teeth are the most visible. Tobacco is one of the major reasons for those ugly stains on your teeth, whether you smoke or chew it. Apart from smearing your teeth, smoking can pose a risk for several oral health problems like gum disease and cancer. The sooner you quit, the better for your overall health.

3. Being too busy or Lazy to Brush or not Flossing Your Teeth

Formation of dental plaque on the surface of your teeth tends to cause blemished teeth. Therefore, it is crucial to maintain good oral hygiene to ensure the plaque doesn’t build-up. Make it a routine to brush your teeth twice a day and use dental floss at least once every day. Combined with a balanced diet, these habits will help you retain the whiteness and shine of your teeth.

4. Aerated Drinks

Many wine lovers replace red wine with sparkling white wine. Instead of helping you, such aerated drinks can soften the tooth enamel making the teeth prone to stains from other food and beverage.

Apart from this, carbonated soft drinks can also cause your teeth developing those unpleasant looking discolouration and spots. Since, these drinks cause high amounts of acid, sugar and pigments, try to avoid these drinks altogether.
