How Invisalign works:
The treatment process

Our Invisalign process is super simple and involves 3 steps.

Step 1: Initial Consultation

Your Invisalign journey starts with a consultation at Aura Dentists in Bayswater or Cranbourne. Our dental team will examine your teeth and determine if aligners are the right option for you. We also take photographs of the face smiling from multiple angles, and together we design the ideal position for your smile.

We use digital scans to create a 3D treatment plan, showing how your teeth will move over time. This allows you to preview your future smile before starting treatment. If you decide to proceed, we will order your custom aligners.

You’ll receive a series of aligners designed specifically for your teeth. Each set is worn for one to two weeks before switching to the next. The aligners apply gentle, consistent pressure to gradually shift your teeth into place.

For best results, you must wear them for 20-22 hours per day, removing them only for eating, drinking, and brushing. Skipping wear time can extend the duration of your treatment.

Every few weeks, you’ll visit our clinic for a check-up. Our team will ensure your teeth are moving as planned and make any necessary adjustments.

Some patients may need additional aligners to fine-tune their results. Once treatment is complete, we may recommend retainers to help maintain your new smile.

How long does Invisalign take?

The length of Invisalign treatment varies depending on your dental needs. Mild cases can be completed in 4-6 months, while more complex cases may take 12-18 months.

Several factors affect treatment time, including:

The severity of misalignment: Crowded or crooked teeth take longer to straighten.

Wearing time: Aligners must be worn 20-22 hours per day for the best results.

Response to treatment: Some teeth move faster than others, which can impact overall progress.

Skipping wear time or removing aligners too often can delay treatment. Our team will monitor your progress and make adjustments if needed to keep you on track.

Invisalign vs. other clear aligners

There are many clear aligners on the market, but Invisalign remains the leading choice. Here’s how it compares to other options:

Invisalign vs. Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are attached to the back of your teeth, making them less visible.  However, they can feel uncomfortable for the tongue, which can affect your speech. They are also limited to certain tooth movements. Invisalign aligners are smooth, removable, and easier to adjust to.

Invisalign vs. Online Clear Aligners

Tooth movements need to be done by a trained professional who monitors the treatment over time. Some aligners are sold online without in-clinic supervision. Without professional monitoring, results may be unpredictable. Invisalign treatment is overseen by a cosmetic dentist to ensure proper tooth movement.

Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces

Metal braces use brackets and wires that can cause irritation and require frequent adjustments. They can be good for large movements in complicated cases. Invisalign offers a more comfortable and simple experience.

Who is a good candidate for Invisalign?

Invisalign is ideal for:

Mild to moderate dental issues – Suitable for correcting crowded teeth, crooked teeth, overbites and small gaps.

Those who want a discreet option – Clear aligners straighten teeth without visible metal brackets.

Patients who can commit to wearing them – Aligners must be worn 20-22 hours per day for effective results.

Invisalign may not be suitable if:

You have severe bite issues – Some orthodontic cases require traditional braces for better correction, such as extruding or intruding teeth or for severe class 2 and 3 patients.

Your teeth need major movement – Clear aligners work best for moderate adjustments.

You struggle with wearing aligners consistently – Not wearing them as directed can slow progress.

You have active gum disease – Clear aligners are not suitable for patients with active gum disease or a high risk of decay.

Why choose Invisalign over traditional braces?

No Food Restrictions

Traditional braces use metal brackets and wires to shift teeth into place. While effective, they can be uncomfortable, harder to clean, and require avoiding certain foods.

Invisalign is a type of clear aligner that offers a different experience. Made of a patented smooth plastic called Smart Tack, they’re designed to deliver the optimal amount of force for more predictable teeth movement. They fit snugly over your teeth and are removable, allowing you to eat, drink, and brush with ease. With no metal parts, there are no food restrictions or difficulties in cleaning.

Many adults and teens prefer Invisalign because the aligners are nearly invisible, allowing for discreet treatment. Their appearance makes them a very popular choice for those who would feel self-conscious wearing braces.

Invisalign aligners cause less irritation compared to metal braces, making them a more comfortable option.

What is the cost of Invisalign?

The cost of Invisalign depends on several factors, including:

The complexity of your case: More severe misalignment may require longer treatment and additional aligners.
Treatment duration:  Longer treatments often cost more.
Replacement or additional aligners: Lost or damaged aligners may increase overall costs.

On average, Invisalign costs more than traditional braces, but it offers greater convenience and a nearly invisible look. Many dental clinics, including Aura Dentists, provide flexible payment plans to make treatment more affordable.

Caring for your Invisalign aligners

Proper care keeps your Invisalign aligners clean and effective. Follow these steps to maintain them:

✔ Rinse your aligners every time you remove them to prevent saliva and bacteria buildup.
✔ Brush them gently with a soft toothbrush (avoid toothpaste, as it can scratch the plastic).
✔ Use lukewarm water—hot water can warp the aligners.
✔ Consider an aligner cleaning solution for deep cleaning when needed.

To protect your teeth during treatment:

✔ Brush and floss after eating before putting aligners back in.
✔ Avoid sticky or crunchy foods that could damage your teeth.
✔ Store aligners in their case when not in use to prevent loss or damage.

FAQ's

Invisalign & Clear Aligners FAQs

Got questions? Checkout our FAQs below.
Are clear aligners as good as Invisalign?

Not all clear aligners offer the same quality. Invisalign uses advanced SmartTrack™ material and is supervised by a dental professional, ensuring precise tooth movement. Some other aligners lack in-clinic monitoring, which may affect results.

The treatment cost varies based on case complexity and location. In Australia, Invisalign typically costs between $3,500 and $8,000. Some dental clinics offer flexible payment plans.

  • Requires discipline – Must be worn 20-22 hours per day for effective results.
  • Not for severe cases – Some orthodontic issues may require traditional braces.
  • More responsibility – Aligners must be removed for eating and kept clean.
  • Higher cost – More expensive than traditional metal braces.
  1. Aligners are intended to be removed only for eating, drinking, and oral care. Unnecessary and excessive removal and insertion of aligners may prematurely damage and/or break the aligners.
  2. Failure to properly store, insert or remove aligners can lead to damage. Patients should read all instructions carefully and should use proper techniques for aligner insertion and removal. Aligners should always be stored in a cool, dry place and in their applicable cases. Attempting to store aligners with mandibular advancement features in a standard Invisalign Aligner Case may damage the aligners.
  3. Keep aligners away from hot water and harsh chemicals and carefully follow the patient instructions below. Do NOT use denture cleaners to clean aligners with mandibular advancement features or soak them in mouthwash. Do NOT use Invisalign Aligner Cleaning Foam, Invisalign Aligner Cleaning Spray, or Invisalign UV Sanitizing Case to clean aligners with mandibular advancement features. These products may damage the surface of the aligner, causing it to become dull, more visible, and may affect bonding of blocks to aligners.
  4. Keep aligners out of reach of young children and pets. For children in treatment, a supervising adult should monitor aligner use, storage and care.
  5. Tobacco use, smoking, and/or vaping while wearing aligners may lead to discoloration or damage. In general, tobacco use has been shown to increase gum disease and to delay tooth movement during orthodontic treatment.
  6. Orthodontic treatment (including aligner treatment) may impair the health of the bone and gums which support the teeth and may aggravate the gums.
  7. The length and success of treatment depends on the patient’s compliance, cooperation in keeping appointments, maintaining good oral hygiene, avoiding loose or broken appliances and following the doctor’s instructions carefully.
  8. Failure to wear the appliance for the prescribed number of hours per day and/or not using the product as directed by the doctor can lengthen the treatment time
